Age Spots are not Beauty Marks

By Elen Hanszen

We all want smooth, unblemished skin and this feeling increases as we grow old and start seeing signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. Many people can lose their self confidence once they start seeing the first signs of aging. When this becomes a major concern, a skin peel is a possible answer to this, and for some, it is the best option.

Chemical skin peels are a simple and effective way to restore your skin's natural beauty. Chemical peels will help you reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your skin. Fresher skin will be revealed underneath the peel, getting rid of dead cells and making skin look fresher and cleaner and of course, it will help make wrinkles less significant.

A skin peel will also help to reduce some other types of skin issues like liver or age spots and can reduce the prominence of freckles also. Chemical peels will result in skin that is more smooth and bright, and will have a more youthful appearance. Chemical peels also have a very positive effect on people suffering from acne; fewer pimples is the expected result, and less inflammation.

While something like a skin product can take weeks on end of constant usage to see results, a chemical peel is something that is over with in several sessions, or just a one time sitting. These are not seriously invasive surgical procedures, like other options in the plastic surgery choices available. Chemical peels are much more than subtle adjustments to skin moisture levels or promises to strengthen collagen like some over the counter creams offer.

A peel does what it sounds like; new cells are encouraged to grow as the rough layers and dead skin on the surface on your face are removed. As newer skin grows to replace the top layers, lines and blemishes will become more difficult to see underneath the fresh skin.

A superficial chemical peel is not painful and therefore no pain relief is needed before, during or after the procedure. Typically, the patient will return for more superficial chemical peel treatments every second week or once a week, for a total of about 6 times for optimal results. The more superficial the peel, the less risk is attached to it. For a few days after a skin peel, the side effects are still noticeable. Although rare, hyperpigmentation has been known to be a side effect, and skin in some cases will appear to have a colour change. The capacity for skin to produce pigment is sometimes affected after a deeper skin peel.

In the week prior to a skin peel of any depth it's usually recommended that patients clean the skin regularly to reduce chance of infection and the use of moisturizer is recommended to promote even results and fast healing. Often a doctor will recommended applying sunscreen daily prior to the procedure.
